Why Christians Should Engage in the Political Process

Christians must be actively involved in politics because it shapes how we live on earth. Standing aside does not align with our calling to be the light of the world (Matthew 5:13-16). While our ultimate citizenship is in God’s Kingdom (Philippians 3:20), we are also earthly citizens with a responsibility to influence society for good (Ephesians 2:10). One of the ways we fulfill this calling is by engaging in all sectors of society, governance included, to promote godly values.

God instituted government (Romans 13:1-2) and calls believers to engage with it in a way that upholds justice and righteousness. By participating in politics, we help infuse leadership and governance with godly principles. To exercise the authority God has given us is to bring His glory into every realm, including the political space. Our mission is for the world to become the Kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ (Revelation 11:15).

“The Kingdom is something that happens rather than something that exists.” — Leon Morris

“It is a kingdom which is to come, yes. But it is also a kingdom which has come. The Kingdom of God is in every true Christian. Whenever Christ is enthroned as King, the Kingdom of God has come. While we cannot say He is ruling over all in the world at present, He is certainly ruling in the hearts and lives of all His people.” — Martyn Lloyd-Jones

Kingdom Responsibilities in a Democracy

If you are called to government or public service, develop your capacity and step up to serve. Walking in the new nature of Christ enables you to make a definite impact. When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice. – Proverbs 29:2. Obey the call by joining a political party and advocating for your community while supporting policies that address real challenges.

However, whether or not you pursue public office, every believer has the following responsibilities:

1. Continuous Prayer

We are commanded to pray for the peace and prosperity of our nation (Psalm 122:6). As believers, we must intercede for Canada and our leaders, asking for wisdom and strength (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

2. Informed Voting

Faith without works is dead (James 2:26). If we genuinely desire godly leadership, we must take action by participating in elections. Voting is a practical way to shape policies that reflect values such as justice and compassion.

3. Active Engagement

Our responsibility does not end with voting. We must keep leaders accountable by monitoring their performance, advocating for sound policies, and speaking out against injustice. Attend council meetings, voice your concerns, file complaints, and communicate with government representatives. You can also use media platforms, social media, and peaceful demonstrations to highlight key issues.

4. Excellent Service

Every believer is called to embody servant leadership—whether in family, work, or community. Unlike the world’s model of leadership, which seeks to dominate from the top down, Christian leadership is rooted in humility, service, and sacrifice. By leading with integrity, we influence those around us to work for the common good.

Democracy is a privilege that must be stewarded wisely. Voting is a clear act of faith and obedience, an opportunity to stand for righteousness and contribute to the well-being of our nation. Make an informed decision in the 2025 elections. Learn more about how to vote here.
